Tip calculator

Tip Calculator and Bill Splitter

How to use: Enter the bill, the tip percent and how many people are splitting it. You get the tip and each person’s share.

How to calculate a tip

Multiply the bill by the tip percent written as a decimal. A 20% tip on an $86.50 bill is $17.30, which makes the total $103.80. Split three ways, each person pays $34.60. For a quick mental estimate, move the decimal one place to find 10%, then double it for 20%.

What is a typical tip?

In the United States, 15% to 20% is common for table service, with 18% to 20% for good service. Tips of 15% to 20% are also common for hair stylists, taxi and rideshare drivers, and food delivery. Customs differ by country, so check local norms when you travel.

Tip before or after tax?

Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, while others tip on the total. Either is acceptable. Enter whichever amount you want to base the tip on in the bill box.

Frequently asked questions

What if the bill already includes a service charge?

Some restaurants add a service charge or automatic gratuity, often for large groups. Check your receipt, and set the tip to 0% if it is already covered.

What if we are not splitting evenly?

Run the calculator separately for each person’s share of the bill and enter 1 for people.
