Percentage Increase Calculator
How to calculate percentage increase
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, then multiply by 100. A positive answer is an increase, and a negative answer is a decrease. This percentage increase calculator does the steps for you.
Example
If a price goes from $80 to $100, the difference is $20, and $20 divided by $80 is 0.25, which is a 25% increase. If it goes from $100 back to $80, the change is minus 20%, not minus 25%.
Common uses
Use it to measure raises, price changes, growth in website visitors or changes in rent. The starting value is always the base, so make sure you enter the old number first. For finding a percent of a number, use the percentage calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a 25% increase not reversed by a 25% decrease?
Because the second percentage applies to a larger number. Going up 25% from 80 gives 100, but going down 25% from 100 gives 75.
