In Heritage Style, Selina Lake celebrates the new nostalgic mood in interiors, using vintage and inherited furniture and other accessories in a fresh, original fashion.

Our homes are more important to us than ever before, and heritage style harks back to the reassuring comfort of traditional interiors. Paneling, wallpaper, floral fabrics, and heritage paint colors provide a backdrop for house plants, artworks, and contemporary crafts, while upholstered and wicker furniture, pretty decorative detailing, and plump throw pillows feel warm, welcoming, and familiar. It’s not only a comforting style, but also a sustainable one, built around pre-owned and vintage pieces sourced at online auctions or on Instagram and given a new lease of life in modern homes. Heritage Style shows how to create a home that feels both modern and nostalgic at the same time—inviting, easy to live in, and full of intriguing personal touches.

Something about salvage

The heritage look doesn’t have to be grand – it can hark back to humble homes too, where craftsmanship and care were taken to build practical features into any everyday space. In Elizabeth Rose’s bedroom, salvaged cladding with a rich patina is accented with a sage green door, while exposed ceiling beams and an earthy red fireplace create a homely, rustic mood. The room is given a boho twist by simply hanging a favourite garment on the door.

Stylish storage

The word ‘pantry’ comes from the Old French word ‘paneterie’. In medieval times, bread was stored in the pantry while meat was kept in a larder. Nowadays, a pantry can either be integrated, freestanding or occupy a room of its own. Sarah Brown worked with Plain English to design this walk-in pantry for her London house. The paint colours, Chop and Nicotine, are exclusive to the brand. The delicate French glass fluted pendant light is a pretty detail.

Fresh greens & ochre

If in doubt, go for green – after all, it’s the colour of nature. Fresh greens combined with warm yellows will create a pretty, fresh feeling, especially when used in conjunction with untreated woods, natural fibre rugs and washed linens. Elizabeth Rose has used Green Verditer by Little Greene to add a pop of colour on her kitchen door and window.

Decorative details & display

Accessories, personal touches and eye-catching collectables are particularly important when creating a heritage home, and as a stylist this is one of my favourite ways to bring interest and atmosphere to a room: Make the most of high ceilings – draw attention to them with vertical displays, such as these flowers hung up to dry, or suspend a collection of baskets. Tall cupboards look great draped with hop bines.

Confidently combining old & new

Antiques were built to last, which is why so many pieces have survived to tell the tale. Opting for antique and vintage furniture is a sustainable way to furnish a home. The retro sunflower painting fits right in. Old armchairs and sofas with good shape can be kept as they are or covered in new fabrics to refresh their appearance.

Future heritage

Contemporary touches, such as the curvaceous terracotta urn on the mantelpiece and the 1960s sofa with its functional fold-down arms, prevent this tiny space from becoming twee. The low milking stool and jug of orange physalis (Chinese lanterns) completes a cosy fireside scene.
