Blue and white is one of the most soothing and adaptable color schemes, and with so many variations you can use it to transform your home.
Blue & White At Home presents 15 unique homes that illustrate the endless possibilities of this timeless palette, which can be fresh and crisp, bold and saturated, dark and moody or timeworn and faded. In the first section, Vintage, author Henrietta Heald explores a Victorian house furnished with antique textiles, a prairie-style ranch in California and a light-filled cottage on Long Island. She then considers Coastal style, drawing inspiration from a whitewashed cabin in Spain and a spectacular modern beach house in South Africa. The third part of the book, Rustic, features an 18th-century English farmhouse, a Scandinavian summer retreat and a country house with over 400 years of history. Throughout the book, Henrietta also highlights particular themes, from walls and floors to fabrics and furniture, and explores ways to bring personality into your living space using collected ceramics, vintage pieces and foraged finds in every shade of blue and white.

It was the hallway, built when the two original cottages were joined together, that inspired the purchase of the cottage. The owners loved the exposed wooden framing and used it as a model for the entire renovation. The blue-painted bench was the first piece of furniture they acquired.
Paint, wallpaper and panelling in ultramarine and other intense blues offer a perfect backdrop to vintage bathroom fixtures, such as an original Victorian washbasin with a blue-and-white-patterned inset bowl.
When teamed with white, neutral or cream walls, doors and ceilings, narrow stripes and small checks make a good foundation for a sophisticated bedroom scheme, with touches of darker hues or a splash of bold pattern for drama.
The blue-painted floor that graces the entire downstairs of the house appears to change its depth of colour from room to room, depending how the light falls. It is often paired with patterned upholstery in paler shades of blue. Books, glass bottles and display items are also used to echo the overall blue theme.
Blue can work in subtle and not-so-subtle ways in dining spaces and kitchens – from the palest of pale sky blues in textured walls or a cooker casing to the zingy turquoise of walls and tiles in a corner used for washing dishes. Patterned blue-and-white plates, soup tureens and storage jars are favourite items for display, and checks are ubiquitous.
The exterior of this seaside cottage is clad in cedar shingles that are typical of the local area and will gradually weather to a beautiful silvery grey. The deck furniture has a muted colour palette, apart from the chic piping around the seat covers and the abstract pattern of the cushions/pillows, incorporating a dark indigo.
